چکیده

Introduction Atlas is the first cervical vertebra. It is ring shaped, without a body. It has an anterior arch, a posterior arch and two lateral masses. The lateral masses articulate with the occipital condyles to form an ellipsoid type of synovial joint. The anterior arch articulates with the dens of the axis to form a pivot type of synovial joint. The posterior arch is grooved by the third part of the vertebral artery. The transverse process has a foramen transversarium where passes the vertebral artery.

Asymmetric Atlas Assimilation And Potential Danger To The Brainstem: A Case Report

Atlas is the first cervical vertebra. It does not have a body like other cervical vertebrae. It has two transverse processes, each one of which bears a foramen transversarium. The vertebral artery passes through this foramen. It has two lateral masses which articulate with the occipital condyles to form atlanto-occipital joints. Rarely, the atlas vertebra fuses with the occipital bone. We obser...

Arcuate foramen of atlas: incidence, phylogenetic and clinical significance.

Arcuate foramen is less known trait of the human atlas vertebra formed by a delicate bony spiculum, which arches backward from the posterior end of the superior articular process. Examination of 1044 human atlas vertebra revealed that the trait was present in 13.8% of the samples. The mean length of the arcuate foramen form was 7.16 mm on the left side and 9.99 mm on the right side in bilateral...

Study of foramen transversaria of first cervical vertebrae and its variations

Introduction Knowledge of variations in foramen tranversarium of first cervical vertebrae is surgically relevant, as its anatomical relation with third part of vertebral artery is one of the proposed causative factor for cervicogenic headache. This study was aimed to determine the incidence, morphological and morphometrical variations of foramen transversarium (FT) of atlas vertebrae in North I...

Posterior Arch Defect of the Atlas Associated to Absence of Costal Element of Foramen Transversarium from 16th-Century Sardinia (Italy).

STUDY DESIGN A paleopathological case of posterior arch defect of the atlas associated to the absence of costal element of the foramen transversarium. OBJECTIVE In living patients as well as in postmortem analysis it should be difficult to distinguish between a congenital and an acquired anomaly. Any anomaly in the anatomy of atlas should be taken into consideration by clinicians, surgeons, r...
